When I decided to build my real estate investing business, I wasn’t trying to create a Fortune 500 company. I wasn’t interested in showing up at 9am on a Monday for an acquisitions meeting, followed by a dispositions meeting at 10am. There’s nothing wrong with that model — some of my closest friends have built incredibly successful businesses that way. But it wasn’t what I wanted.

What I wanted was to spend two months sailing the Bahamas. To take every December and travel through Europe. To build something that kept running whether I was in the office or on the other side of the world.

So that’s exactly what I built.

My entire team is virtual. My organization is fully remote. And my business runs the same no matter where I am. That’s what I call a lifestyle business — and it didn’t happen by accident. It happened because I made a deliberate decision early on to build my business around the life I wanted, rather than building a life around my business.

Once You Start Making Real Money, the Question Changes

Early on, the focus is survival — closing deals, generating revenue, figuring out the basics. But once you get past that stage and start making consistently good money, a new and more important question emerges: How do you want to live?

That shift in thinking is what separates investors who are always grinding from investors who have true freedom. And it’s a conversation most real estate educators never have with their students.
